Some people even use it as an annual mulching system to keep weeds down.
The lasagna gardening technique has been around for a very long time, but was revolutionized by Patricia Lanza, who wrote the very popular book, of course, Lasagna Gardening.
Lasagna gardening is a no-dig, no-till organic gardening method that results in rich, fluffy soil with very little work from the gardener. It is an excellent way to convert grass to vegetable beds, create new perennial borders, improve soil and soil structure, and recycle organic material at home. Newspaper, cardboard, shredded leaves, straw, compost, untreated grass clippings, coffee grounds, vegetable scraps, and aged animal waste (like chicken, rabbit, guinea pig, and cow manures) all work well.
